I got this strange vibe at DCXII, a mellow vibe. for hours at a time there was hardly anyone around the pools. hardly any pointless vandalism. much fewer assholes (no ripper!! woot!). none of the crackdown feeling of the last 2 cons. i actually got to meet cool new people...

so while i'm no expert on defcon (only been going since 8) it feels like defcon is definitely changing. or maybe it's just me.

well, the same people have been going to defcon for what, over 10 years now? Age tends to mellow people.

Also, wasn't CTF like 26 straight hours? After that, I would just like to pass out.

I mean HOPE by comparison was pretty anarchistic, and the ave. age was probably around 22. Not many items for sale for chicks either; which indicates that the mostly male crowd had nothing to do but drink and go nuts..

I dunno. I didn't go to con, so maybe I have it all wrong..

To me DefCon 2004 was the mellowest one at the Alexis Park yet... It reminded me of the pre-Alexis Park days - basically the days of the cons in the 90s when it was *more* about the technology / cool hacks and *less* about the "scene".

My first DefCon was DefCon 6 at The Plaza on Freemont Street (1998), so I don't have many prior DefCons to compare it to either.... Prior to that I used to attend SummerCon (back when it was in ATL) and went to one or two HoHoCons (wasn't that Austin? Gawd it's been a long trip...)

So yeah, I was happy to see a return to what I felt was the original "spirit" of the hacker community / cons - sharing information and meeting people. Here's to more of that (and a healthy side of wild partying) in a little over a week!!
